Troy is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, located about 15 miles north of downtown Detroit. As of the 2020 census, Troy had a population of 87,294, making it the largest community in Oakland County and the 13th-most populous municipality in Michigan.
The area's earliest recorded land purchases occurred in 1819, and a settlement called Troy Corners was established a few years later when Johnson Niles bought 160 acres in what is now the north-central part of the city. Troy Township was officially organized in 1827 and was named after Troy, New York and the ancient city of Troy, reflecting the origins of many early settlers who came from New York. As sections of the township were later incorporated into the cities of Birmingham, Clawson, and Royal Oak, the remainder was incorporated as the city of Troy in 1955, a decision made primarily to prevent border cities from annexing more land and to establish more robust city services for residents whose numbers were increasing rapidly as Detroiters relocated to surrounding suburbs.
Today, Troy spans 33.64 square miles and is entirely urban. According to 2020 census data, the city is home to 32,961 households with a median household income of $96,864. The median age is 41.6 years, with 22.1 percent of residents under age 18 and 18.3 percent age 65 or older. Troy's population has grown steadily, from approximately 80,959 in 2000 to 87,294 by 2020.
