Ferndale is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, located about ten miles northwest of downtown Detroit along the Woodward Corridor. According to the 2020 census, the city has a population of 19,190 and covers 3.88 square miles.
The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans before farmers began cultivating the land in the 1800s. The arrival of the automobile industry and the automotive assembly line sparked rapid population growth. Ferndale was incorporated as a village in 1918 and became a city on April 4, 1927, following a citizen vote. It developed into a bedroom community for Detroit workers, with most residential growth occurring between 1920 and 1951. Trolley lines running through the median of Woodward Avenue connected northern suburbs to Detroit, making commuting accessible for workers and shoppers alike.
By the 1970s, Ferndale had established itself as a family-oriented community during the Baby Boom era, offering elementary schools, a vibrant downtown, parks, and active civic organizations. Ferndale High School was completed in 1958. The downtown shopping district along Nine Mile Road flourished from the 1940s through the 1960s but later declined.
