Madison Heights is an inner-ring suburb of Detroit located approximately 12 miles north of downtown in Oakland County, Michigan. Originally part of Royal Oak Township, the community incorporated as a city by popular vote on January 17, 1955, and became chartered that same year on December 6, establishing itself as the tenth city government in southern Oakland County. At the time of incorporation, the 7.2 square mile city was among the largest suburban communities in the Metro Detroit area. The city's first municipal building occupied the former township offices at 26305 John R Road before a new municipal building was dedicated on April 5, 1963, at its present location on West Thirteen Mile Road.
Today, Madison Heights spans 7.09 square miles and is strategically positioned within the Interstate 696 and I-75 corridor, with Interstate 75 running north to south on the city's west side and Interstate 696 forming its southern border. The city shares boundaries with Troy to the north, Royal Oak to the west, Hazel Park to the south, and Warren to the east. Madison Heights maintains a primarily residential character, with approximately 91 percent of its buildings being single-family homes or condominiums, yet the city's tax base is substantially supported by light industrial and commercial properties, which comprise 60 percent of the tax base. According to the 2020 census, Madison Heights had a population of 28,468 residents.
