Berkley is a northern suburb of Detroit located roughly 14 miles northwest of downtown in Oakland County, Michigan. Situated along the Woodward Corridor, the city is home to 15,194 residents as of the 2020 census.
The land that became Berkley was originally dense forest and swampland that many considered uninhabitable. As explorers pushed through the challenging terrain north and west of Detroit, they discovered what locals called "fine farming country." By the 1840s, the area contained numerous dairy farms. The completion of the Highland Park Ford Plant in the 1910s brought significant growth, spurring the conversion of farmland into residential subdivisions. In 1923, the area incorporated as a village, taking its name from a road that Elmer Cromie had named after his farm and the nearby Berkley School under construction.
The Wall Street Crash of 1929 devastated the community, with roughly 90 percent of the 5,558 residents losing their jobs. The village incorporated as a city in 1932 to gain greater oversight of taxes and community issues. Post-war suburbanization brought substantial development during the 1940s, and Berkley High School was built in 1949. The city peaked at 23,375 residents in 1960.
Today, downtown Berkley stretches along 12 Mile Road and Coolidge Highway, featuring restaurants, boutiques, and shops.
