Rochester Hills is a city in Oakland County, Michigan, located approximately 25 miles north of downtown Detroit. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 76,300. The area's history spans thousands of years, beginning with Native American settlement by the Potawatomi people, who relied on the region's abundant water sources including the Clinton River and Paint Creek. Following the 1807 Treaty of Detroit, Native Americans ceded their Southeast Michigan lands to European settlers. James Graham became the first European settler in 1817, and Avon Township was formally organized in 1835. The village of Rochester incorporated within the township in 1869 and adopted a charter in 1948 under Michigan's Home Rule Act. In 1967, Rochester incorporated as a separate city, allowing its residents to avoid township property taxes. The remaining township pursued city status for many years, facing several failed charter votes before finally achieving success. In 1984, following voter approval of a city charter, Avon Township incorporated as the City of Rochester Hills. The name was chosen by voters over the alternative "Avon Hills," reflecting the area's historical connection to Rochester and its rolling terrain. Earl E. Borden became the city's first mayor. Today, Rochester Hills spans 32.91 square miles and serves as a northern Detroit suburb with diverse residential neighborhoods.
