Commerce Township is a charter township located in Oakland County, Michigan, approximately 34 miles northwest of downtown Detroit. As of the 2020 census, the township had a population of 43,058. The history of Commerce Township dates back to May 1824, when Abram Walrod arrived as the area's first settler. The township was officially organized for self-government on March 7, 1834, carved out from the original Novi Township alongside Lyon Township. The township today encompasses several communities, including the incorporated village of Wolverine Lake, and is bordered by the cities of Walled Lake and Wixom to the south. The area's geography includes significant water features, with water comprising about 8.19 percent of the township's total 29.90 square miles.
