Valleyford is an unincorporated community in Spokane County, Washington, situated twelve and a half miles southeast of downtown Spokane on the Palouse Highway. According to the 2010 census, the community had a population of 2,913 residents. Before European settlement, the Coeur d'Alene people valued the Valleyford area for its abundant camas harvests. European settlers began arriving in the second half of the 1800s when the Mullan Road opened the Inland Northwest to migration. Valleyford's strategic location near where two branches of this road converged positioned it well for growth.
The community's fortunes changed dramatically in 1908 when the Spokane and Inland Empire Railroad, an electrified interurban railway, arrived and connected Valleyford to Spokane and surrounding towns. The railroad also brought electricity to the area, spurring optimistic growth. Town officials platted the community for expansion they believed would continue, but this vision was not realized. The Great Depression dealt a severe blow to Valleyford's development, and the community never fully recovered from that economic downturn. A post office has operated in Valleyford since 1907 under its current name, though the origin of that name remains obscure. Today, Valleyford sits surrounded by farmland and forests on the northern edge of the Palouse, a productive wheat and legume growing region. The community includes a fire station, county park along California Creek, a church, and various residential and commercial structures alongside abandoned buildings.
