Marshall is an unincorporated community in Spokane County, Washington, located eight miles south-southwest of downtown Spokane. Named in 1880 for early settler William H. Marshall, the community sits in a half-mile wide valley carved by Marshall Creek, which flows through the area to Latah Creek. The surrounding landscape is mostly flat and rocky, characteristic of the Columbia Plateau, though ponderosa pines and basalt outcroppings are common to the region.
The first road through what would become Marshall was established in 1870. William Marshall arrived in 1878 and opened a sawmill two years later, an enterprise that sparked community growth. The post office was established in March 1880, the same year the town received its name. The Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway arrived in the early 1900s, further connecting Marshall to the broader region. Multiple rail lines pass through Marshall today, including Union Pacific and the Lakeside Subdivision of the BNSF Railway, though Amtrak's Empire Builder passes through without stopping.
The community has a modest character, with residential areas, a post office, and a community church. A quarry operates immediately north of Cheney-Spokane Road. Marshall operated its own school district until 1960, when it merged with the Cheney school district.
