Deer Park is a city in Spokane County, Washington, located north of Spokane. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 4,383 residents. The community was officially incorporated on June 24, 1908, earning its name when railroad surveyors spotted deer grazing in the area. Settlement began in 1889 when a railroad siding was built for the Spokane Falls & Northern Railway. The Standard Lumber Company sawmill, established by William Short and George Crawford, played a vital role in providing lumber to rebuild Spokane following the great fire of 1889. By 1900, Deer Park had grown to approximately 300 residents and boasted three general stores, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a drug store, a school, and a church. The region became a lumber hub, with as many as eight sawmills within ten miles of town. Around 1906, the Arcadia Apple Orchards Company was established, and apple orchards were planted on land cleared by logging operations. During World War II, a municipal airport was built east of the city and dedicated in August 1944, featuring three paved runways. In the early 1960s, an Atlas missile site operated near the airport before being decommissioned in 1965. Today, Deer Park remains an active community that hosts annual events including Settlers Days in July, a Summer Concert Series, and Winterfest in January.
