Chattaroy is an unincorporated community in Spokane County, Washington, situated on U.S. Route 2 approximately ten miles north-northeast of Spokane, where the Little Spokane River and Deer Creek converge. Founded in the 1880s, the community was originally called Kidd until the Great Northern Railroad requested a name change to avoid confusion with another town of the same name on its Montana line. Two local women, Mrs. Robert Cowgill and Mrs. Alexander B. Owen, renamed the town Chattaroy after a character from a novel they were reading at the time, adapting the French spelling to create the modern version. A post office has operated in Chattaroy since 1888, the same year residents began using the local cemetery. By 1900, the growing community supported approximately 250 residents and included two general stores, Barker's Hotel, a drug store, a blacksmith shop, a public school with about sixty students, a Congregational church led by Reverend F. McConaughy, a Sunday school, and a Modern Woodmen of America hall. The town was situated two miles east of the defunct Spokane Falls & Northern Railway's Dragoon station. Today, Chattaroy is home to Chattaroy Elementary School, which serves preschool through fourth grade students as part of the Riverside School District. The region experiences warm, dry summers characteristic of its warm-summer Mediterranean climate.
