Newman Lake is an unincorporated community located 17 miles east-northeast of downtown Spokane in Spokane County, Washington. The area and its namesake lake take their identity from William Newman, an early settler who helped establish the community in the 1880s. Originally known as Moab, the settlement was served by the Northern Pacific Railway, which eventually operated excursion trains connecting the area to Spokane, making it a destination for travelers seeking recreation and fresh air. In the 1930s, the local post office was renamed from Moab to Newman Lake to reflect the community's preferred identity. Today, Newman Lake remains an unincorporated community served by its own post office, which carries ZIP code 99025. The area is also home to Ellerport Airport, a private-use facility. The freshwater lake continues to sustain the community's character, and notably, as of summer 2014, the lake became inhabited by freshwater jellyfish, an unusual presence that reflects the unique ecological conditions of this eastern Washington waterway.
