Gaithersburg, located in Montgomery County northwest of Washington, D.C., has grown from a small agricultural settlement into a thriving suburban city. The area was first settled in 1765 as Log Town on land that would eventually be associated with Benjamin Gaither, who built his home there in 1802. By the 1850s, the community bore Gaither's name, and this was officially recognized when the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad constructed a station called Gaithersburg in 1873. The town was incorporated on April 5, 1878, and later upgraded to city status in 1968. Today, Gaithersburg is Maryland's third-largest incorporated city with a population of 69,657 according to the 2020 census.
The city's development accelerated during the late nineteenth century following the railroad's arrival, with churches, schools, mills, and hotels springing up around the station. A remarkable achievement came in 1899 when Gaithersburg was selected as one of six global locations for an International Latitude Observatory to measure Earth's polar wobble. This observatory, now the city's only National Historic Landmark, operated until 1982.
