Burtonsville is a census-designated place in the northeast corner of Montgomery County, Maryland, situated where the county borders both Howard and Prince George's counties. As a suburban community in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area, it offers convenient access to major regional centers, lying just 16 miles north of downtown Washington, 20 miles southwest of Baltimore, and 25 miles from Annapolis. According to the 2020 census, Burtonsville had a population of 9,498.
The community's origins trace back to colonial times, when the area was known as the Patuxent Hundred. Early land grants shaped the region, including Maiden's Fancy and Bear Bacon in the early 1700s, followed by substantial holdings like Richard Snowden's iron master operations. The town itself takes its name from Isaac Burton, who in 1825 purchased his siblings' shares of their father's land and became the area's major landowner. Burton and his wife Keturah raised 17 children in the area. In the 1850s, Isaac Burton established the first post office, operating it from his store at the intersection of Old Columbia Pike and the Sandy Spring road. Today, Burtonsville's center remains anchored around the intersection of Maryland Route 198 and U.S. Route 29.
