Ashton is an unincorporated community in Montgomery County, Maryland, located at the junction of Route 108 and New Hampshire Avenue. The origin of its name remains uncertain among residents. Some longtime community members believe it derives from a large ash tree that once stood at the intersection of these two routes. Others suggest it is a portmanteau combining "Ashland" and "Clifton," names of two Thomas family homes each situated about a mile from the junction. For census purposes, the United States Census Bureau groups Ashton together with the nearby community of Sandy Spring to form the census-designated place of Ashton-Sandy Spring, with all census data compiled for this combined entity. The community has undergone significant planning efforts to shape its future. The 1998 Ashton Master Plan articulated a vision to preserve the character of Sandy Spring and Ashton as a historic rural community. However, this preservation goal has proven challenging against development pressures in the area. The plan itself acknowledged that zoning strategies permitting large-lot, low-density development patterns and clustering around village centers had not been as effective as originally intended in maintaining rural character. Beginning in 2020, substantial development initiatives commenced under the Ashton Village Center Sector Plan, bringing new projects to the community including completed commercial ventures and ongoing community developments.
