Aspen Hill is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located six miles north of Washington D.C. in Montgomery County, Maryland. According to the 2020 census, the community has a population of 51,063 residents. The name Aspen Hill comes from aspen trees that once grew near the area's first post office, which opened around 1864 in a general store at what was then known as the Washington-Brookeville Pike, now the intersection of Connecticut and Georgia Avenues.
The community experienced significant development in the mid-twentieth century. In July 1950, attorney Louis M. Denit sold 517 acres to Gelman Construction Company for approximately $300,000. Gelman planned to build 2,450 three-bedroom homes priced under $10,000 each, along with shopping centers, schools, playgrounds, and churches. Five years later, in January 1955, Minnie Goodman sold 268 acres, described as the last large vacant tract between Rockville and Wheaton, to Metropolitan Homes, Inc., which planned to construct 12,000 homes starting at $15,000 each.
Earlier in the twentieth century, Aspen Hill was home to Aspen Hill Memorial Park, one of three pet cemeteries operating on the East Coast during the 1920s and 1930s. The cemetery honored pets, including dogs that served during World War I, with memorial ceremonies often held on World Day for Animals. More recently, Aspen Hill was one of two locations where fatal shootings occurred during the October 2002 Beltway sniper attacks.
