Newton is a town in southeastern New Hampshire located in southern Rockingham County, with a population of 4,820 according to the 2020 census. The town spans 10.0 square miles and is bordered to the south by Merrimac, Massachusetts. Newton's history is rooted in the Masonic land purchase of 1746, when it became the sixth town granted from that original grant. Originally part of Salisbury, Massachusetts, the settlement later became affiliated with Amesbury before eventually establishing its own identity. The New Hampshire legislature shortened the name to Newton in 1846.
