New Castle is a town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, located entirely on islands at the mouth of the Piscataqua River. With a population of 1,000 at the 2020 census, it is the easternmost and smallest town in New Hampshire by area. The main island, originally called Great Island, was settled in 1623. An earthwork defense built on Fort Point evolved into Fort William and Mary, which was rebuilt in 1808 as Fort Constitution. Chartered as a parish of Portsmouth in 1679, New Castle was incorporated on May 30, 1693, and named after the fort. Until 1719, the town included what is now Rye. Early industries included trade, tavern-keeping, fishing, and agriculture, with settlers using abundant seaweed as fertilizer.
The town holds a notable place in American history. In 1682, Great Island experienced a mysterious phenomenon recorded as lithobolia, or stone-throwing, at George Walton's tavern that created sensation throughout America and England. Fort William and Mary was also the site of one of the first acts of the American Revolution on December 14, 1774, when colonists raided it and seized 100 barrels of gunpowder later used at the 1775 Battle of Bunker Hill.
