Londonderry, located in western Rockingham County between Manchester and Derry, has grown into one of New Hampshire's larger towns, with a population of 25,826 at the 2020 census. The town's roots run deep in colonial history, originating in an area first known as Nutfield due to its dense woods with nut trees. On June 21, 1722, the town was officially chartered and named Londonderry after the province of Ulster in Ireland, following a petition submitted in 1719 by settlers, many of whom came from Ireland and New England. The town's early history was marked by land disputes with neighboring communities that persisted through the early nineteenth century.
Londonderry's development accelerated with the arrival of railroad transportation in the mid-1800s, beginning with the Manchester and Lawrence Railroad in November 1849. The Manchester and Derry Street Railroad, or trolley car, operated between the two cities from December 1907 until August 1926. However, the most transformative period came after World War II, when suburbanization and the construction of Interstate 93 spurred significant growth. Today, the town is known for its apple orchards and is home to the headquarters of Stonyfield Farm as well as part of Manchester–Boston Regional Airport.
