Candia is a town in Rockingham County in southeastern New Hampshire, with a population of 4,013 according to the 2020 census. Settled in 1743, the town was originally part of Chester and known as "Charmingfare" for its pleasant scenery and many bridle paths. When incorporated in 1763, it was renamed Candia in compliment to Governor Benning Wentworth, who had once been a prisoner on the island of Candia, an ancient name for Crete in the Mediterranean Sea.
The town's landscape covers 30.6 square miles and includes three notable villages: Candia proper, Candia Four Corners, and East Candia. Hall Mountain, located in Bear Brook State Park in the northwestern part of town, is the highest point at 941 feet above sea level. The North Branch River drains most of the town eastward toward the Lamprey River.
Candia's history includes a significant railroad heritage. The Portsmouth & Concord Railroad served the town, and in 1862 the route was reorganized to run from Manchester to Portsmouth through Candia. The Boston & Maine Railroad took over operations in 1895 as their Portsmouth Branch. Passenger service ended in 1954, with the last trains passing through in the early 1980s. The tracks were removed between 1983 and 1985, and today the railbed serves as part of the Rockingham Recreational Trail, preserving this piece of local transportation history for residents and visitors to enjoy.
