Epping is a town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, with a population of 7,125 according to the 2020 census, an increase from 6,411 in 2010. Originally part of Exeter, one of the four original New Hampshire townships, Epping was incorporated as a town in 1741 under a charter granted by Governor Jonathan Belcher, making it the last New Hampshire town chartered by that governor before the province gained its own chief executive. The town was named for Epping in England. Throughout the nineteenth century, farming formed the backbone of Epping's economy, while the town's substantial clay deposits supported a thriving brick-making tradition that culminated in the establishment of the first commercial brickyard in 1840. Epping's strategic location made it an important railroad junction for the Worcester, Nashua & Rochester Railroad and the Portsmouth & Concord Railroad, though rail service gradually declined through the latter half of the twentieth century. Today, the town has developed into a retail center thanks to its position at the crossroads of Routes 101 and 125. The community maintains cultural traditions including an annual canoe race on the Lamprey River held the last weekend in April and Camp Hedding's annual August camp meeting, which traces its roots to 1863 as a Methodist revival center.
