Fremont is a town in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, with a population of 4,739 according to the 2020 census. Originally settled in the 1720s as part of Exeter, the area became known for its abundant eastern white pine trees, which were reserved for use as masts for the Royal Navy. Tensions over timber use erupted in 1734 when local residents confronted surveyor-general David Dunbar at the Copyhold Mill, an event that escalated into the Mast Tree Riot when citizens disguised as Indians attacked Dunbar and his men on his return visit. The town was formally granted in 1764 under the name Poplin before being renamed Fremont in 1854 in honor of General John C. Frémont, the first Republican presidential candidate. Fremont boasts several sites of historical significance, including the Fremont Meeting House, built in 1800 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1993. The town also has a notable industrial heritage, having once housed the state's largest brickyard and the Spaulding & Frost Cooperage, established in 1874 and among the oldest operating wooden barrel manufacturers in the country.
