Deerfield is a town in southeastern New Hampshire, located in Rockingham County on the western side of the county. The population has grown steadily, reaching 4,855 residents at the 2020 census, up from 4,280 in 2010. The town spans 52.1 square miles and is home to the annual Deerfield Fair, a long-standing community tradition.
Deerfield's history is distinctive and rooted in an unusual origin story. Originally part of Nottingham, the town petitioned for separate incorporation in 1756 but was denied. A second petition in 1765 succeeded after two local hunters presented colonial governor Benning Wentworth with a deer, leading to Deerfield's incorporation in 1766. The Leavitt family, early settlers from nearby Exeter, played a significant role in the town's founding and left their mark on the landscape with Leavitts Hill.
The historic Deerfield Parade district, settled around 1740 on a hilltop along the early postal route between Concord and Portsmouth, served as a center for militia training during the Revolutionary and Civil wars. Citizens established Deerfield Academy there around 1798 as a high school, though the building burned in 1842.
