Windsor, a town in Broome County, New York, sits on the county's southern border east of Binghamton and encompasses the village of Windsor, situated along the Susquehanna River. With a population of 5,804 at the 2020 census, Windsor has deep roots in the region's history.
The area was originally home to indigenous peoples, including members of the Iroquois Confederacy who utilized the Susquehanna River for transportation, water, and fishing. Around 1712, remnants of the Tuscarora tribe, an Iroquoian-speaking people who had migrated from North Carolina due to conflicts with English colonists, settled in the northern part of the town. In 1722, the Tuscarora were formally accepted as the Sixth Nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. The fortified village of Onaquaga became a significant outpost, with a mission established by Indian Superintendent Sir William Johnson and support from Mohawk and other British allies. During the American Revolutionary War, Joseph Brant used Onaquaga as a base for his Volunteers, who fought alongside the British. In retaliation for raids on frontier communities, the Continental Army destroyed Onaquaga in October 1778.
Settlement resumed in 1785 when new migrants, many Yankees from New England and Revolutionary War veterans, arrived in the region. Windsor was officially established as a town in 1807, the year following Broome County's formation, carved from the town of Chenango. Subsequent boundary adjustments occurred in 1821 with the creation of Sanford and Colesville, and again in 1851 with the formation of Conklin. For many years, agriculture formed the foundation of the local economy.
