Whitney Point is a village in Broome County, New York, located in the southwestern corner of the town of Triangle, north of Binghamton. Named after Thomas and William Whitney, early developers who arrived around 1800, the village was first settled in the area around 1791 and was officially incorporated in 1871. The community has experienced significant challenges throughout its history, including a catastrophic fire in 1897 that nearly destroyed the village and serious flooding in 1935 and 1936 that prompted construction of a dam on the Otselic River. Completed in 1942, this dam eventually formed Whitney Point Lake, a recreational reservoir that inspired the village's playful slogan, "best town by a dam site." The village has deep historical roots as the home of the Broome County Fair since 1874 and briefly manufactured the Whitney automobile around 1902. Grace Episcopal Church, an important local landmark, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. As of the 2020 census, Whitney Point had a population of 960 and is part of the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village sits at the junction of multiple state and federal routes, with convenient access to Interstate 81, making it an accessible community nestled where the Tioughnioga River meets the Otselic River.
