Vestal is a town in Broome County in New York's Southern Tier, positioned between the Susquehanna River and the Pennsylvania border. With a population of 29,110 according to the 2020 census, it serves as a western suburb of Binghamton and is home to the main campus of Binghamton University. The first European settlers arrived around 1785, though the area had earlier been home to the Ochugnut tribe of the Tuscarora people. During the American Revolution, soldiers from the Sixth Massachusetts Regiment burned indigenous villages in the region, including one at what is now Vestal's downtown area near Choconut Creek. After the war, European families settled near Union, and the town of Vestal was formally established in 1823 from the southern half of Union. Throughout the twentieth century, Vestal developed as a residential suburb supporting nearby industries including Endicott Johnson Corporation, IBM, and Lockheed Martin. In 1954, New York broke ground on a new campus for Harpur College, which relocated from Endicott and became Binghamton University by 1961. The town also gained the Kopernik Observatory and Science Center, opened in 1974 to commemorate astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus. During the 1990s, Vestal transformed into the Southern Tier's major retail center with numerous shopping plazas developed along Vestal Parkway. Today, the town balances its historic central business district on Front Street with modern commercial development.
