Johnson City is a village in Broome County, New York, with a population of 15,343 according to the 2020 census. Located in the town of Union on the western side of Binghamton, it forms part of the "Triple Cities" alongside Endicott and Binghamton. The village spans 4.6 square miles on the north side of the Susquehanna River and benefits from proximity to several major interstates.
Originally incorporated in 1892 as Lestershire, the village was renamed Johnson City in 1916 to honor George F. Johnson, leader of the Endicott Johnson Corporation. Known as the "Home of the Square Deal" for the company's fair treatment of employees, much of Johnson City's early prosperity was rooted in this industrial success. Later, neighboring Endicott's growth with IBM further boosted the local economy. However, deindustrialization across the United States devastated the region, causing significant population decline as nearly all industry disappeared over several decades. In recent years, the village has experienced revitalization efforts led by the expansion of United Health Services and Binghamton University. In 2009, residents voted against dissolving the village, with the measure failing by just 42 votes. Today, Johnson City is part of the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area and continues to serve as a hub for education and healthcare in the region.
