Upper Saddle River is a borough located in Bergen County, New Jersey, with a population of 8,353 as of the 2020 census. The community has experienced modest growth over the past two decades, increasing from 7,741 residents in 2000 to 8,208 in 2010. Originally settled by the Lenape Native Americans, the area was colonized in the eighteenth century primarily by Dutch settlers who built mills along the Saddle River. The borough was officially incorporated on November 22, 1894, during a period of rapid municipal formation in Bergen County. Upper Saddle River remained largely rural until the 1950s, when suburban growth transformed the region and the population increased tenfold between 1950 and 1970. Since then, the population has remained relatively stable. Today, Upper Saddle River is predominantly a residential community characterized by one-acre lots. The borough encompasses 5.27 square miles and is bisected by the Saddle River, a tributary of the Passaic River. In addition to residential areas, the community features a library, police and fire stations, an ambulance corps, a municipal hall, and three primary schools, with commerce concentrated along Route 17 on the western border. The borough is notably affluent, with a median household income of $176,674 as of the 2013–2017 American Community Survey, ranking eighth in New Jersey, and 42.9 percent of households earning more than $200,000 annually.
