Paramus is a borough located in central Bergen County, New Jersey, approximately 15 to 20 miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan. The Wall Street Journal has characterized it as "quintessentially suburban," though it serves as far more than a quiet bedroom community for New York City workers. The area's name likely derives from Lenape Native American language, possibly meaning "land of the turkeys" or "pleasant stream." Paramus was formally incorporated as a borough on March 2, 1922, created from portions of Midland Township. The community's transformation from a quiet farming area happened remarkably fast. By 1940, Paramus had only 4,000 residents and 94 retail establishments. However, the opening of the George Washington Bridge in 1931 and the expansion of Routes 17 and 4 set the stage for dramatic change. During the 1950s and 1960s, the borough was redeveloped into shopping corridors as developers recognized that shopping malls were more profitable than truck farming. The opening of major department stores like those in the Bergen Mall and Garden State Plaza in 1957 established Paramus as the "first stop outside New York City for shopping," capitalizing on New Jersey's lack of sales tax on clothing and food. From 1948 to 1958, the population nearly quadrupled from 6,000 to 23,000. Today, Paramus generates over six billion dollars in annual retail sales, more than any other ZIP code in the United States, despite maintaining some of the nation's most restrictive blue laws that ban most businesses from operating on Sundays.
