Oradell is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, located approximately 15 miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan. As of the 2020 census, the borough had a population of 8,244, representing modest growth from 7,978 residents in 2010. Originally formed on March 8, 1894, as the borough of Delford during the "Boroughitis" phenomenon that swept Bergen County, the community was created from portions of three townships. The name Delford combined references to Oradell and New Milford, the two communities within the new borough. On November 12, 1920, residents voted to change the borough's name to Oradell, which derives from the Latin word "ora," meaning edge, combined with "dell." New Jersey Monthly ranked Oradell as the 68th best place to live in New Jersey and the seventh best in Bergen County. The borough encompasses 2.57 square miles and includes the Oradell Reservoir, formed by a dam on the Hackensack River that was completed in 1923. This dam significantly reduced flooding in the eastern portion of the borough, though it also affected the river ecosystem. The borough borders six Bergen County municipalities and has experienced steady residential development as a suburban community serving the New York City metropolitan area.
