Cresskill is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, with a population of 9,155 as of the 2020 census. The name originates from "cress," referring to the watercress that grew in its streams, and "kill," a term for the stream passing through the area. The borough was incorporated on May 8, 1894, from portions of Palisades Township during a period known as "Boroughitis," when twenty-six boroughs were formed in Bergen County in that single year alone. A portion of the borough was later annexed by Alpine in 1904.
Historically, railroads transformed Cresskill into an important commercial hub, providing connections to New York City customers. Among the notable enterprises was a chicken hatchery that became the world's largest by 1897. The borough played a significant role during World War I, as Camp Merritt became a major debarkation point for more than a million American troops heading abroad. To honor this contribution, a large obelisk memorial, locally known as "The Monument" or "The Circle Monument," was dedicated in 1924 at the Camp Merritt Memorial Circle intersection.
The borough rests on land originally inhabited by the Munsee-Delaware people.
