Lodi is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, with a population of 26,207 according to the 2020 census, reflecting steady growth over the past two decades. The name comes from the Italian city of Lodi in Lombardy. The borough was incorporated on December 22, 1894, from portions of the former Lodi Township and Saddle River Township during a period of rapid municipal formation known as "Boroughitis" that swept through Bergen County at the time.
Originally, Lodi served as a destination for thousands of immigrants who came to work at mills along the Saddle River. The industrial character of the borough shifted in the 1940s when multiple dye and chemical factories replaced the earlier textile operations. However, this industrial development came with serious safety risks, as evidenced by several tragic explosions. In 1969, an explosion at what would later become the Napp Technologies site killed one person and injured seven. A 1973 explosion at the Mallinckrodt Chemical Company killed seven workers. Most notably, a 1995 explosion at the Napp Technologies plant claimed five lives and injured two others.
Today, Lodi covers 2.29 square miles and borders eight other Bergen County municipalities. The borough remains an urban area with diverse neighborhoods, though residents should be aware that certain areas are prone to flooding during heavy rain.
