Teaneck is a township in Bergen County, New Jersey, that has served as a bedroom community in the New York metropolitan area for generations. As of the 2020 census, the township was home to 41,246 residents, making it the second-most populous municipality in Bergen County, behind only Hackensack. The township was officially established on February 19, 1895, following a referendum held on January 14, 1895, in which voters approved incorporation by a margin of 46 to 7. Created from portions of Englewood Township, Ridgefield Township, Bogota, and Leonia, Teaneck uniquely chose to incorporate as a township rather than a borough, bucking the trend sweeping across Bergen County at the time. At its founding, the township had a population of just 811.
Teaneck's strategic location at the junction of Interstate 95 and the eastern terminus of Interstate 80 has shaped its development and historical significance. The township sits at the crossroads of important transportation routes, including Route 4, which bisects the community, and the River Subdivision of CSX Transportation.
