Pocola is a town in Le Flore County, Oklahoma with a population of 4,255 as of the 2020 census. The town's name comes from a Choctaw word meaning "ten," referring to its location approximately ten miles from Fort Smith, Arkansas. Pocola's history stretches back to the establishment of a post office on February 15, 1881, when the settlement was part of Skullyville County within the Choctaw Nation. The area witnessed significant Civil War activity, with the Battle of Devil's Backbone occurring nearby on September 1, 1863, resulting in a Union Army victory. Economic development came through coal mining in the 1880s, when Will Hartshorne began operating a small mine that eventually employed six men before being sold to the Fort Smith and Western Coal and Railway in 1896. The community experienced population fluctuations throughout the twentieth century, declining from an estimated 200 residents in 1900 to about 75 by 1918, a period when the post office temporarily closed in 1916. The turning point came in 1963 when Pocola incorporated, securing water rights along the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System and preventing annexation by neighboring communities. Following incorporation, the town expanded significantly to cover 30 square miles and experienced substantial population growth, reaching 1,840 residents by 1970 and 3,268 by 1980. The post office reopened in 1986. Today, Pocola is served by U.S. Route 271 and Oklahoma State Highway 112, with commercial air transportation available through Fort Smith Regional Airport.
