Leflore, Oklahoma traces its origins to the construction of the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad, which opened in 1887. That same year, the community was established as a station stop along this important rail line, and a post office opened on August 26, 1887, serving LeFlore in Indian Territory. The town took its name from the LeFlore family. At its founding, Leflore was situated in the Moshulatubbee District of the Choctaw Nation. Located approximately 25 miles west of Poteau, the town covers 1.4 square miles.
The community experienced modest growth over the early 2000s. The 2000 census recorded 168 residents, while the 2010 census showed the population had increased to 198, representing a 13.1 percent gain. Though the legal town name uses the two-word spelling LeFlore, the official federal designation and postal name is Leflore. In 2000, the town's population was predominantly white at 67.26 percent, with Native Americans making up 27.98 percent of residents. The median household income stood at $25,833, though nearly 30 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Families with children under eighteen comprised about 37 percent of households, and the median age was 36 years, reflecting a community with a mix of younger and older residents.
