Cameron is a small town in Le Flore County, Oklahoma, located eight miles northeast of Poteau. The community traces its origins to 1886 and 1887, when the Fort Smith and Southern Railway laid tracks through the area where approximately forty people already lived. At that time, Cameron was part of Skullyville County within the Moshulatubbee District of the Choctaw Nation. The United States Post Office Department officially established a post office named Cameron, Indian Territory in 1888. The town's name may have honored either William Cameron, a former Mine Inspector for Indian Territory, or James Cameron, an employee of the Fort Smith and Southern Railway.
An important early institution was the Cameron Institute, established in 1883 by James Reynolds, a successful rancher and entrepreneur. Though sponsored by the Presbyterian Church, the institute welcomed students of any denomination and provided education from primary through high school levels. Reynolds built a distinctive home in Cameron that resembled a castle, now known as the James E. Reynolds House, which appears on the National Register of Historic Places in LeFlore County.
According to the 2020 census, Cameron had a population of 323 residents. The town covers a total area of 0.3 square miles and is entirely rural. Its population has remained relatively stable, with 312 residents recorded in the 2000 census.
