Arkoma is a town in LeFlore County, Oklahoma, situated on the border between Oklahoma and Arkansas. The town's name itself reflects this unique location, created as a portmanteau of the two states. According to the 2020 census, Arkoma had a population of 1,806 residents.
The community was established around 1911 on land owned by Captain James Reynolds, a Civil War veteran who had married into the Choctaw Nation. Reynolds envisioned his property as a suburban extension of nearby Fort Smith, Arkansas, and constructed houses to rent. He successfully convinced the Fort Smith Light and Traction Company to build electric trolley tracks to serve his new community, though the streetcar line operated only until 1917. Arkoma was formally incorporated as a town in 1946.
Geographically, Arkoma occupies 3.6 square miles and benefits from a temperate climate with mild winters and hot summers. The town is bounded by the Poteau River to the west and north, while the Arkansas-Oklahoma state line forms its eastern border.
