Monroe is an unincorporated community and census-designated place located in far eastern Le Flore County, Oklahoma. This small rural settlement has deep roots in the region's history, dating back to 1881 when a post office was established at Monroe, Indian Territory, on February 25 of that year. The community was named for its first postmaster, Simon Monroe Griffith. At the time of its founding, Monroe was situated in Skullyville County, which formed part of the Moshulatubbee District of the Choctaw Nation.
Today, Monroe remains a quiet rural community with a modest population. According to the 2020 census, Monroe had 164 residents, all of whom lived in rural areas. The community's demographics reflect an aging population, with a median age of 55.8 years. Approximately one-third of residents were 65 years of age or older, while just over one-fifth were under 18. The community contained 59 households across 74 housing units at the time of the census, with nearly half of all households being married-couple families. Though small in size, Monroe represents an important piece of Oklahoma's frontier heritage, having persisted in far eastern Le Flore County for well over a century.
