Stilwell began as an unincorporated community in Johnson County, Kansas, shaped by the expansion of railroad infrastructure in the late 1800s. When the Missouri Pacific Railroad planned to extend its line south from Kansas City, engineers initially chose the town of Aubry as a route. However, the local topography forced a change, and the railroad decided to lay tracks a half mile to the east. This shift prompted Michael O'Keefe, J. Larkin, W. A. Kelly, and A. J. Norman to file a plat for Mt. Auburn in 1886, which would become Stilwell. The first post office opened in June 1888, and the community was renamed Stilwell in 1889. Like many towns along the railroad's route to the Gulf of Mexico, Stilwell takes its name from Arthur Stilwell, founder of what became the Kansas City Southern Railroad. As Aubry's population declined, Stilwell grew into its place.
Today, Stilwell remains mostly agricultural, with sod farms comprising much of the landscape. In recent decades, the area has transformed as suburban development has accelerated. The growth of nearby Overland Park increased demand for new neighborhoods, raising land values in some areas while other farm properties have been abandoned.
