Lenexa is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, situated within the Kansas City metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 57,434, making it the ninth-most populated city in Kansas. The city is bordered by Shawnee to the north, Overland Park to the east, De Soto to the west, and Olathe to the south.
The area's history is rich and varied. In 1857, Wild Bill Hickok staked a claim on 160 acres near what is now the corner of 83rd Street and Clare Road, close to the Kansas River and about twenty miles southwest of Westport, Missouri. The following year, Hickok was elected one of the first four constables of nearby Monticello Township. Around the same time, a census of Shawnee Indians in the area recorded Na-Nex-Se Blackhoof, widow of Chief Blackhoof, who had been the second signer of the 1854 treaty ceding 1.6 million acres of the Kansas Shawnee Indian reservation to the United States government.
The town itself was platted in 1869 by Octave Chanute, a railroad civil engineer, after the Missouri River, Fort Scott and Gulf Railroad purchased a right-of-way from C.A. Bradshaw. According to legend, the town was nearly named Bradshaw, but Bradshaw declined the honor. Instead, the name Lenexa was adopted, derived from Na-Nex-Se, the wife of Shawnee Chief Blackhoof. Today, Lenexa is known as the birthplace of Garmin and hosts a regional headquarters for Kiewit Construction.
