The name Shawnee Mission derives from the Shawnee Methodist Mission, a historical church mission to the Shawnee tribe founded in 1830 by the Methodist church. Originally established in what is now Wyandotte County, the mission was relocated to Johnson County in 1839. Over time, Shawnee Mission became an informal regional designation for the area surrounding the actual mission, particularly as various towns in northeast Johnson County developed and expanded. Today, the Shawnee Mission School District and Blue Valley School District serve most of the area.
