Overland Park is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, and the second-most populous city in the state, with a population of 197,238 according to the 2020 census. It is the largest city in Johnson County and the most populous suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, serving as one of four principal cities in the Kansas City metropolitan area.
The city's origins trace to 1905, when William B. Strang Jr. arrived and began plotting subdivisions along an old military roadway that would become the city's principal thoroughfare. He developed large portions of what would later become downtown Overland Park. On May 20, 1960, Overland Park was officially incorporated as a city of the first class with a population of 28,085. The decades that followed saw dramatic growth, with the population nearly quadrupling to 111,790 by 1990 and reaching 173,250 by 2010. This expansion allowed Overland Park to surpass Kansas City, Kansas in the early 2000s, becoming the state's second-largest city after Wichita.
Much of this growth came through traditional suburban development and annexation. The city now encompasses 75.37 square miles and spans nearly the full north-south length of Johnson County.
