Monticello is a town in Aroostook County, Maine, situated on the northern branch of the Meduxnekeag River. Originally known as Wellington Township, it was settled in 1830 by General Joel Wellington, who owned the land, and was incorporated in 1846. The town had a population of 737 at the 2020 census.
Monticello holds a significant place in the history of Native American seasonal workers in the region. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, migrant workers known as the "Amerisee" made their home here and throughout Aroostook County. The Amerisee were members of all five Wabanaki Maine tribes who traveled together as seasonal workers, often journeying across Canada and the county to reach farmland. The name comes from the Mi'kmaq word "Amase'jijg," meaning "some distance" or "quite far," reflecting the considerable distances they traveled for work. These tribal members envisioned forming a sixth tribe that would reunite people from all five original tribes, which had been separated through colonization. Though this effort ultimately failed and members were reabsorbed into their tribes of origin, families like the Matthews, who appear in the 1900 Census, left an important legacy. John Matthew, a Mi'kmaq basket maker, exemplified this migrant heritage, having been born in Restigouche Indian territory before settling in Monticello.
