Limestone is a town in Aroostook County, Maine, with a population of 1,526 at the 2020 census. Founded in 1849 by Mark Trafton, who served as customs officer of Fort Fairfield, the town was officially incorporated on March 17, 1869, and named for the regional limestone deposits found in the area. Trafton and his associates established the Limestone Mill Company in 1846, laying early groundwork for the community's development.
The town's modern identity was shaped significantly by military presence. In 1952, the United States Air Force opened Loring Air Force Base near Limestone, which brought substantial growth and prosperity. The population peaked at 13,102 in 1960 during the base's operational years. However, following a 1991 Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommendation, Loring Air Force Base closed on September 30, 1994. The former base is now the Loring Commerce Centre, one of Maine's largest industrial parks, and part of its territory is home to the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge.
Today, Limestone is distinguished by educational excellence. The Maine School of Science and Mathematics, a public residential high school for gifted students that opened in 1995, shares its campus with the town high school and ranked number two in the United States by U.S. News & World Report in 2019.
