Easton is a town in Aroostook County, Maine, with a population of 1,320 at the 2020 census. The town's history began in 1851 when Henry Wilson, a former schoolteacher from Presque Isle, built the first known residence in the Easton wilderness. Solomon Bolster arrived three years later and joined Wilson and Augustus Rackliffe as residents. In 1855 and 1856, Noah Barker divided the township into 142 lots of 160 acres each, establishing the town's layout. The state organized Easton as Fremont Plantation on July 26, 1856, and a schoolhouse was built two years later. Early economic growth centered on lumber mills, though development slowed during the Civil War. The town was officially incorporated in 1865, when the first store opened in 1863. By 1880, the population had reached 835. The late nineteenth century brought industrial development, including a starch factory in 1877 and a steam shingle mill in 1879. Easton became known as one of the greatest potato-producing towns in the county. The 1880s also saw the arrival of Methodist, Free Will Baptist, and Odd Fellows organizations. Today, Easton spans 38.93 square miles and experiences a humid continental climate with significant seasonal temperature variations. The town is home to the Francis Malcolm Science Institute planetarium and has produced notable figures including politician Tyler Clark and Daniel Wathen, who served as Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.
