Ashland is a town in Aroostook County in northern Maine with a population of 1,202 as of the 2020 census. Covering 81.54 square miles, the town is surrounded by smaller communities including Masardis, Oxbow Plantation, Portage, Nashville Plantation, and Garfield Plantation. The area's landscape is characterized by soils with stony silt loam texture.
The community traces its roots to William Dalton, who in the 1830s became the first American to establish residency at the site. Ashland was organized as a plantation in 1840 with forty heads of household, then incorporated as a town in 1862. The town briefly carried the name Dalton from 1869 to 1876 before reverting to Ashland. Its present boundaries took shape in 1901 when Sheridan Plantation, organized to the north in 1878, was annexed. During the nineteenth century, Ashland lay on the stage route connecting Patten and Fort Kent, and logging became the area's dominant industry. The lumber business reached its peak around 1915, though the industry continues in smaller measure today.
For education, the town consolidated its school system in 2010, opening the new Ashland District School for grades K through 12 next to the former Ashland Community High School. The building that had housed the high school for nearly fifty years was demolished to create new athletic fields.
