Machias is a town in Down East Maine and the county seat of Washington County. With a population of 2,060 as of the 2020 census, it serves as home to the University of Maine at Machias and Machias Valley Airport, a small public airport owned by the town. The town's name comes from the Passamaquoddy language and roughly translates to "bad little falls," referring to the Machias River that runs through the area.
The English first became acquainted with the region in 1633 when Richard Vines established a trading post for the Plymouth Company. However, the area did not see sustained settlement for many years. In 1762, settlers from Scarborough visited searching for hay and found abundant grass in the marshes. Word of the area's advantages spread, and in 1770, the General Court granted land here for settlement. Many of those early residents came from Scarborough, and by 1770 several mills had been erected on the area's rivers.
Machias holds an important place in American Revolutionary history. In June 1775, the town was the site of the Battle of Machias, which James Fenimore Cooper called "the Lexington of the Seas." After townspeople refused to provide the British with lumber for barracks, settlers led by Captain Jeremiah O'Brien and Captain Benjamin Foster captured the armed British schooner HMS Margaretta, marking the first naval battle of the American Revolution.
