Jonesport is a historic fishing and lobstering town located on a peninsula six miles into the Gulf of Maine in Washington County. Settled before the American Revolution, the town was incorporated as Jonesborough on March 4, 1809, following a land grant of nearly 48,000 acres made by the Massachusetts General Court in 1789 to John C. Jones and others. The town was later renamed Jones' Port when a portion was set off and incorporated separately on February 3, 1832. Today, Jonesport has a population of 1,245 as of the 2020 census and encompasses the villages of Jonesport, Mason Bay, Monsapec, and West Jonesport.
The town's economy has traditionally centered on fishing and boat building, with blueberry harvesting and tourist services also contributing to the local economy. Jonesport's many uninhabited islands serve as important nesting grounds for diverse seabird species, including eiders, cormorants, eagles, loons, and razorbills. Two nature preserves, Western Brothers Island and the Great Wass Archipelago, protect these valuable habitats. The town gained historical significance in 1866 when a group of Christian restorationists sailed from Jonesport to Ottoman Palestine with hopes of preparing the land for Jewish settlement. A wooden house built by one of those families still stands today in Tel Aviv, serving as a unique reminder of Jonesport's distinctive past.
