Harrington, located in Washington County, Maine, is a historic seafaring and shipbuilding village with deep roots in the region's maritime heritage. Originally known as Plantation Number 5, it was one of six townships granted east of the Union River by the Massachusetts General Court in 1762. The town was first settled around 1765 and officially incorporated as Harrington in 1797 with a population of 177. In 1848, its eastern section separated to form the town of Milbridge.
Throughout the nineteenth century, Harrington developed into a thriving industrial center. Local farmers cultivated wheat and potatoes in the town's sandy loam soil, while the community built considerable prosperity through lumber trade. By 1859, the town boasted two sawmills, three shingle mills, and two lath mills alongside a gristmill, two brickyards, a tannery, and eighteen shipbuilders. By 1886, additional industries had emerged, including a sailmaker and a boot and shoe manufacturer.
Geographically, Harrington spans 50.31 square miles at the head of Narraguagus Bay, bordered by Harrington Bay and Pleasant Bay on the Gulf of Maine. The town is drained by Curtis Creek, the Mill River, and the Harrington River. Today, Harrington has a population of 962 according to the 2020 census. The community maintains its heritage through institutions like the Gallison Memorial Library and is home to Narraguagus High School.
