Lubec, pronounced loo-BEK, is a town in Washington County, Maine, that holds the distinction of being the easternmost municipality in the contiguous United States. Located on a peninsula overlooking an ice-free harbor in Passamaquoddy Bay, the town was first settled around 1775. Originally part of Eastport, Lubec was incorporated on June 21, 1811, and named for Lübeck, Germany. In its early decades, the town developed a diverse economy centered on agriculture and fisheries, with considerable industrial activity by the mid-1800s including mills, shipyards, and boat-building operations. The town reached its population peak in the 1910s and 1920s with over 3,300 residents, but has experienced steady decline since then, falling to 1,237 people by the 2020 census. Today, Lubec is home to Quoddy Head State Park and is known for the distinctive red-and-white striped West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, which has guided ships through the Quoddy Narrows since 1858. The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Bridge connects the town to Campobello Island in Canada, and the town hosts the Bay of Fundy International Marathon, which began in 2013 and starts at West Quoddy Head Lighthouse.
