Wilmot Flat is served by New Hampshire Route 11 and sits within a town that was incorporated in 1807, formed from parts of New London, the Kearsarge gore, and a small piece of New Chester, later renamed Hill. The town itself was named after Dr. James Wilmot, an English clergyman who served as rector at Barton-on-the-Heath in Warwickshire and spoke out against England's treatment of the American colonies during the Revolutionary era.
The broader town of Wilmot, which includes the communities of Wilmot, Wilmot Flat, and North Wilmot, had a population of 1,407 at the 2020 census. Located in northwestern Merrimack County within the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Region, the town encompasses 29.6 square miles and is dotted with several ponds including Eagle, Butterfield, Piper, White, Tannery, and Chase ponds. The area is drained by Cascade Brook, Kimpton Brook, and Frazier Brook, all flowing toward the Blackwater River in neighboring Andover. Mount Kearsarge, which rises to 2,931 feet on the southern border, is the highest point in both the town and Merrimack County. Winslow State Park, located at the mountain's northern foot, offers hiking access to the summit and is named after Captain John Winslow, commander of the USS Kearsarge, which sank the CSS Alabama in a famous Civil War naval battle in June 1864.
